Hi, I’m Eben.
I’m a design director living in Los Angeles. I have nearly 15 years of UX experience, and 5+ leading design strategy for complex software products. I enjoy crafting experiences people fall in love with.
Here are some things I’ve learned.
Design is messy. It’s a process full of zigzags and curlicues and very few straight lines. Creativity requires room and the freedom to make mistakes. My role is situated between this mess and the rigor of the product development process. I’ll be your liaison, translating the mess of making into the delivery of artifacts your teams can run with. I’ll share just enough to give you context, but conceal the rest so you can focus attention elsewhere.
Design is a balance. There is no perfect design. Design requires making hard choices, and consciously acknowledging the tradeoffs. User experience, aesthetics, development cost, business imperatives—they all matter, and yet often conflict. My purpose is to leverage all of these inputs to deliver designs that strike the correct balance for your organization.
Design is fundamental. As Steve Jobs once said, “Design is how it works.” Without design, you have no product; without a product that meets users’ needs, you have no business. Delivering real value through quality design is imperative to business success. I can help you translate your business goals into design direction, and evangelize design throughout your organization so that it becomes a shared fundamental.
Design is human. Developing products that elicit delight and engender user love requires a human touch, and a lot of careful listening. Design starts with your users. I’ll help you understand their journeys, and show you how your product can meet them along the way. Through research, I’ll ensure the needs of the humans using your product don’t get lost in the day-to-day noise of running a business. This is human-centered design.
Design is adaptive. Meeting the objectives outlined above isn’t easy, and no singular design process will accommodate every scenario. Instead I bring a toolbox chock full of tools and methodologies, and employ them in a manner befitting the task at hand. I constantly seek new tools and approaches in order to adapt to the changing needs of your business, your customers, and the landscape into which your product is delivered.
